The Five Spaces of Creation
with Jos Houben, 4th - 6th Jan 2025

We are delighted to be welcoming back to Belfast the amazing Jos Houben who will be hosting a masterclass, as part of this year’s Theatre Works Fest NI with support from our partner The MAC, Belfast. This masterclass focuses on his recently developed teachings called the five spaces. Jos will focus on bringing awareness of the internal and external body space to the unlimited space of the imagination and how to bring this to performance.

Theatre is the ultimate art of Time and Space: in real time and real space we take the audience on a journey to an imaginary time and space.

Renowned teacher, Jos Houben (Ecole Jacques Lecoq), will guide you through the five intuitive spaces we carry at every given moment of our lives, that develop from our first movements as a baby through to the maturity of adulthood.

Each of the five spaces has its own particular characteristics and its own implications. You will discover first how to recognize and access each of the spaces and with Jos’ expert teaching make the leap towards theatre and creativity.

You will learn how to apply and utilise these spatial concepts to create and play with more poetic effect, pertinence and depth. A truly revealing and empowering experience is guaranteed.

Jos Houben studied theatre at the Jacques Lecoq School and with Philippe Gaulier, Monika Pagneux and Pierre Byland. Jos is an Olivier Award winning original member of Complicité. From 2003 he toured all over the world with his celebrated one-man show ‘The Art Of Laughter’. In 2007, Jos performed in ‘Fragments’, a compilation of short Samuel Beckett pieces directed by Peter Brook. Jos works internationally in theatre, opera , contemporary dance, circus, and as a teacher for numerous organisations, universities and festivals. He has taught at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq since 2000.

This masterclass is open to practitioners of all art forms, e.g. performers, writers, directors, curators, visual artists, musicians etc. It is also suitable for teachers and anyone who has an interest in creative learning from a non-arts background. Participants must be over the age of 18. Participants are required to have loose and neutral clothing and to bring a few ordinary daily life objects (elementary: eg. sticks, ropes, planks) or utilitarian (eg. tools, kitchen utensils etc).
